deterministic, but rather they interact with individual differences and other contextual
factors. Different individuals within the same cultural group may still exhibit variations
in their sensory experiences and perceptual interpretations.
Understanding the influence of culture on sensation and perception is essential in
areas like cross-cultural psychology, intercultural communication, and designing cul-
turally inclusive environments. It reminds us that our perceptions are not solely deter-
mined by the properties of the stimuli but are also shaped by the cultural lenses through
which we view the world.
3.2.3 Psychological Cross-Cultural Difference
Psychological filters are the internal mental processes that shape how individu-
als perceive and interpret information. These filters include attitudes, beliefs, values,
expectations, and social norms that influence how we understand and respond to the
world around us. These filters can vary from person to person and can impact how we
perceive and interpret events, situations, and other people’s behaviors. They play a cru-
cial role in shaping our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
A person’s likes, dislikes, and moral beliefs act as filters that shape their perception
of incoming stimuli. These filters affect how we interpret and make sense of the world
around us. For example, if someone has a strong dislike for a particular political group,
they may filter information about that group in a way that reinforces their negative be-
liefs. Similarly, someone’s beliefs about what is right or wrong can impact their judg-
ment and interpretation of certain situations or actions. These filters can influence our
attention, interpretation, memory, and decision-making processes, ultimately shaping
our overall perception of reality. It’s important to recognize that these filters are subjec-
tive and can vary from person to person.
3.3 Barriers to Accurate Perception in Cross-Cultural Com-
munication
People from different cultures usually have very different perceptions towards the
same phenomenon, for their cultures have influenced their perceptions. People often
see this world from their unique perspectives. The perspective is affected by a number
of different barriers. Some common barriers include:
