Chapter 6 Climate education for the public

comprehensive analysis of this case, the public gains a profound understanding of the close
connection between addressing climate change and improving urban environmental quality.
This clarifies their responsibility in reducing pollution emissions and actively combating cli-
mate change, motivating them to adopt eco-friendly actions like green commuting and ener-
                 gy conservation in daily life.
                     (2) The Significant Importance of Practical Activities in Enhancing Public Engage-
                 ment and Experiential Perception
                     1.Community Tree Planting Activity
Organizing community tree planting activities is a popular and effective form of en-
vironmental protection practice. During the preparation stage, it is necessary to explain in
detail to participants the crucial role trees play in addressing climate change. Trees serve as
nature’s “air purifiers” and “carbon sink factories” - through photosynthesis, they absorb car-
bon dioxide from the atmosphere, convert it into organic matter stored in trunks, branches,
and root systems, while releasing oxygen. Scientific research indicates that a mature tree can
absorb approximately 48 kilograms of carbon dioxide annually, and during its growth pro-
cess cansequester significantamounts of carbon, playing a notable role in mitigating global
                 warming.
At the tree planting site, professionalsshould be present on-siteGuide participants in
proper tree planting. First, select suitable planting locations based on the characteristics of
different tree species to ensure adequate sunlight, water, and growing space. When digging
planting holes, ensure appropriate depth and width to facilitate root expansion and growth.
During planting, after placing the sapling in the hole, straighten it and backfill soil gradually.
Gently tamp down the soil during backfilling to stabilize the sapling. After planting, water
promptly to provide sufficient moisture and improve survival rates. Throughout the activity,
educate participants about tree growth habits - including different species’ requirements for
light exposure, water, soil pH levels - and maintenance essentials like regular fertilization,
                 branch pruning, and pest/disease prevention.
After the event concludes, establishing a long-term tracking mechanism is crucial. Or-
ganize participants to regularly revisit the planting sites to observe tree growth. Over time,
participants can personally witness the saplings they planted gradually grow taller, with their
canopiesbecome denser and root systems more developed. This hands-on involvement in and
witnessing of tree growth process can greatly enhance participants’ sense of achievement
and responsibility. They will deeply realize that their small actions can contribute tangible
strength to improving the environment and combating climate change, thereby becoming
more proactive in subsequent environmental actions, and paying greater attention to protect-
ing trees and the natural environment in daily life, fostering long-term, stable environmental
                 awareness and behavioral habits.
                     2.Climate Observation Practical Activity
