Appendix 3 Interview Record
(Participant B)
Time: 1:00 p.m.-1:30 p.m., 29 March 2017
Venue: Hunan Restaurant, Floor 2, No. 927 Development Avenue, Economic and
Technological Development Zone, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province
Interviewee: Participant B, a customs officer
Interviewer: Huang Weijie
Huang: Nice to meet you! This empirical research is mainly for my Ph.D. thesis. My topic is
user-generated content (UGC) and copyright. UGC refers to the content that is created
by amateurs rather than professionals. Examples of UGC include fanfictions, parodies,
remixes, samplings, etc. UGC is fundamentally different from traditional copyrighted
works in many aspects, such as the non-economic incentives and collaborative
authorship. This brings significant challenges to copyright law. I have watched the MV
“Women in the Customs (关徽下的红装)” you made with your colleagues that
showed your daily work in the customs. It is really awesome. Also, by glancing over
your Moment in WeChat, I found that you guys made a micro film “Always be with you
(一路有你)” in 2015 that also talked about your work in the customs. Do you often
have this kind of creation?
Participant B: Thanks. I merely made guest performer in the micro-film so I cannot provide
much information on that. The MV is the first creation I made after working in the
customs. The juniors told us that almost every year they would make some videos, most
of which were used to show the work of CPC (Communist Party of China). This MV is
the first attempt to use the video for entertainment. as we this partial entertainment nature
of the MV is the first attempt.
Huang: Why did you choose MV or micro film as the form to create?
Participant B: I think compared to other forms, videos can present more information and
attract more colleagues to participate.
Huang: Have you or other members learned the skills of music, film or editing before? Do
you learn by yourself or get special training from teachers?
Participant B: The colleague in charge of shooting and editing was majored in photography
when he was in the university. He himself was very interested in this. I am in charge of
editing music. I love singing so I taught myself some audio software to edit music when
I was in the university.
