A Study on the Role of UGC Platforms in Copyright Law: Appendix 3 Interview Record (Participant B)
An Intermediary-oriented Approach
Huang: Have you participated in such creation when you are in the university?
Participant B: Well, user-generated media had not been popular at that time, so I did not
make such creation.
Huang: I saw that you adapted the song “I want you (我要你)” wrote and composed by
Fan Chong. Did you ask for his permission?
Participant B: Yeah. After we decided to use this song, we did think of the copyright issue.
We tried to contact Mr. Fan by weblog and messages, telling him that we hope to use his
song for public interest. And we were lucky to get his approval to use the song for free.
Huang: Wow, you’ve gotten the approval from Mr. Fan!
Participant B: Yeah. To be honest, it is out of our expectation. But if we could not get
permission, we would not make this MV at the outset.
Huang: It seems that the government has a strong awareness of protecting intellectual
property.
Participant B: I heard that there was once a half-made MV cut by the leader of the customs
due to copyright issue.
Huang: I have to say that I didn’t expect such a strong sense of protecting IP in our
government. Maybe it is because you are in Guangzhou?
Participant B: Well, I think maybe it is because of the customs system. The General
Administration of Customs has set a Video Examination Center to examine all videos
submitted from all lower-level customs, so we are very careful to avoid IP infringement.
Huang: Got it.
Huang: Could I ask who sing the song? It’s so sweet.
Participant B: Thanks. The singer was our colleague. We have put the names of the singer,
lyricist and director at the beginning of the MV.
Huang: Are all the images used in the MV photographed by your team? Have you used any
online photos?
Participant B: The images in the MV were all photographed by ourselves, or photographed
by our colleagues for other videos. We do not use photos from outer source. Our
colleagues who are in charge of editing are very cautious in this aspect.
Huang: What software you used to make the MV? Is it difficult to combine all the voice,
photos and videos into a MV?
Participant B: We use the software “premiere” to edit the video and the software “cool
edit” to edit the voice. It is not difficult to learn how to use these software. But the skill
should be employed frequently otherwise it may be easily forgot. In fact, we learn from
practicing.
Huang: How long did it take to edit?
