An Intermediary-oriented Approach
Appendix 6 Interview Record
(Participant E)
Date: 12:40 p.m.-2:00 p.m., 24 March 2017
Venue: Pizzahut, GOGO Business Center, Higher Education Mega Center, Panyu District,
Guangzhou
Interviewee: Participant E, a junior student in the law school of Sun Yat-sen University
Interviewer: Huang Weijie
Huang: Thank you very much! This empirical research is mainly for my Ph.D. thesis.
My topic is user-generated content (UGC) and copyright. UGC refers to the content
that is created by amateurs rather than professionals. Examples of UGC include
fanfictions, parodies, remixes, samplings, etc. UGC is fundamentally different from
traditional copyrighted works in many aspects, such as the non-economic incentives and
collaborative authorship. This brings significant challenges to copyright law. I would
like to know how you create UGCs and your attitudes toward copyright law through this
interview.
Participant E: No problem, I would like to help.
Huang: Could I make a sound record? All your personal information will remain strictly
confidential and merely for research purpose.
Participant E: Sure.
Huang: What kind of UGC you create?
Participant E: I have two public accounts in WeChat, including a public account for the
football team for our law school and a public account for myself.
Huang: Is there a team doing the law school’s public account?
Participant E: Yeah, we have a team. All members are volunteers from law school students.
Huang: When did these two accounts start?
Participant E: The account for our law school has started since 2016, and my own public
account has started since 2015.
Huang: why do you want to have a user-generated media, i.e. the WeChat public account?
Participant E: Because I wish to record life in order not to forget the wonderful experience. I
have recorded the places I went, the food I eat and some skills for preparing IELTS.
Huang: I guess you must have many fans.
Participant E: Haha, not really.
Huang: How frequent do you update your account?
