indicators such as exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity—along with their calculation
methods—a holistic and scientific evaluation of regional climate change vulnerability can be
achieved, providing robust theoretical and data-driven support for formulating targeted and
practical regional adaptation strategies.
III. Case Studies on Climate Change Impacts and Vulnerability in
Typical Regions
Within the grand narrative of global climate change, different regions exhibit vastly
divergent climate change impacts and vulnerability characteristics due to their unique geo-
graphical, climatic, and ecological environments. Conducting in-depth studies on representa-
tive regions holds immeasurable value for profoundly understanding the diversity and com-
plexity of climate change impacts, thereby formulating precise and effective adaptation and
response strategies.
(1) Case Analysis of Coastal Areas
The coastal areas of Bangladesh serve as an epicenter of climate change impacts,
demonstrating extreme vulnerability. Global warming causes thermal expansion of seawater,
coupled with accelerated melting of polar glaciers, leading to persistent sea-level rise that is
particularly pronounced along Bangladesh’s coast. According to long-term and systematic
scientific monitoring data, the rate of sea-level rise in this region has significantly exceeded
the global average over recent decades.
The rising sea level has triggered a series of interconnected severe issues. Coastal ero-
sion has become increasingly frequent and intense, with raging waves battering the coastline
day after day, gradually devouring vast stretches of land. The tranquil life in many coastal
villages has been shattered, as residents helplessly watch their homesOnestep by step being
consumed by seawater, with living spaces continuously shrinking. Compelled by circum-
stances, numerous residents have no choice but to attempt relocation inland. However, inland
land resources remain equally constrained, facing multiple obstacles during migration. New
settlements often lack essential infrastructure and public services, leading to a drastic decline
in residents’ quality of life.
The phenomenon of seawater backflow is becoming increasingly severe, as seawater
intrudes deep into coastal rivers and groundwater systems. The direct consequence of this
change is the salinization of freshwater resources. For coastal residents, once-clear drinking
water has turned bitter and unpalatable, failing to meet daily consumption needs and posing
serious health risks. In agricultural irrigation, the saline-contaminated water sources severely
inhibit crop growth. This region traditionally relies on rice cultivation, which is highly sen-
