Chapter 6 Climate education for the public

ple, when consumers opt to purchase energy-efficient appliances, electric vehicles, or utilize
renewable energy, they are essentially decreasing reliance on traditional fossil fuels, thereby
reducing individual carbon footprints. Such consumption behaviors not only help alleviate
the pressures of climate change but also drive the development of clean energy and techno-
                 logical innovation.
Additionally, by avoiding single-use plastic products and switching to biodegradable or
recyclable materials, green consumption further mitigates environmental issues caused by
plastic waste and greenhouse gases generated during disposal processes. Specific examples
include adopting reusable shopping bags, tableware, and water bottles. These simple daily
choices can significantly reduce the volume of plastic waste while lowering carbon emis-
sions from production and disposal processes, thereby effectively minimizing damage to the
                 natural environment.
                     2. Promoting the Circular Use of Resources
Green consumption advocates choosing products and services with higher resource
efficiency to promote the circular use of resources. By encouraging consumers to purchase
second-hand goods, adopt rental services, or participate in sharing economy activities, this
consumption pattern helps reduce resource waste and environmental damage. For instance,
opting to buy refurbished items or utilize services offered by sharing platforms can effec-
tively decrease the demand for newly produced resources while reducing pollution generated
                 during manufacturing processes.
Furthermore, active consumer participation in waste recycling and reuse programs
serves as another crucial way to advance resource circulation. This includes reselling or do-
nating unwanted items such as books, clothing, and electronic devices. Such actions not only
conserve raw materials but also extend the product lifecycle, thereby reducing waste gener-
ation. Additionally, supporting locally made handicrafts or products created from recycled
materials contributes to more efficient resource utilization.
                     3. Protecting Ecosystems
Green consumption helps maintain the health and stability of ecosystems by encourag-
ing consumers to choose products and services with smaller environmental footprints. For
instance, preferring organic food, marine products obtained through sustainable fishing prac-
tices, and eco-friendly household items can effectively reduce overexploitation of agricultur-
al, fishery, and forestry resources, thereby protecting biodiversity and maintaining ecological
                 balance.
Furthermore, when consumers show preference for environmentally certified goods,
they are essentially supporting businesses in implementing sustainable development practic-
es and driving the entire supply chain toward greener transformation. For example, purchas-
ing products labeled with “carbon footprint certification” or “eco-labels” indicates that these
goods have adopted measures during production to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and
environmental pollution. Such choices not only minimize the environmental impact of per-

                                                                                           • 281 •
