tion of the carbon footprint assessment system. To sum up, there are still the following
problems and challenges to comprehensively promote the carbon footprint assessment
technology in China.
The localized carbon emission database of multi-domain whole life cycle and
whole process needs to be improved. The existing research mostly relies on foreign
databases and calculation software. The carbon emission of key industry areas in China
is larger, the process flow is more complex (especially in the steel industry), the car-
bon emission nodes are more and the sources are more extensive (electricity/heat, fuel,
materials, etc.), the existing localized database mostly relies on literature value or sta-
tistical value, and the data is not precise enough to support the carbon footprint assess-
ment and calculation of the whole life cycle and whole process. How to realize the data
collection and database construction of multi-industry complex multi-emission node
system is facing great challenges.
A high-precision, standardized and internationally recognized carbon footprint
assessment methodology remains to be developed. The existing carbon footprint as-
sessment methods mainly include LCA method (bottom-up), IOA method (top-down)
and hybrid method, etc. Even if the same LCA method is adopted, when the boundary
demarcation method and data acquisition method are different, there will not be signifi-
cant difference in results. The difference in measurement results under different regions,
different scenarios and different method systems greatly affects the horizontal bench-
marking of products and the international recognition of future carbon footprint indica-
tors. For example, some domestic carbon emission data measured in China are 10% ~
15% lower than those in foreign countries. Therefore, how to establish a standardized
assessment method for different industries and different scenarios, and strive for inter-
national recognition, is facing great challenges.
The research on the combination of carbon footprint and carbon emission reduction
assessment is not in-depth enough, and there are few marked demonstration projects
with carbon footprint supporting the implementation of the low-carbon scheme. At
present, the carbon accounting for key industrial emission control industries only focus-
es on the total amount accounting, which is difficult to support the accurate formulation
of carbon emission reduction technology route. Based on the LCA method, a carbon
emission reduction analysis and assessment technology system for different industries,
fields and processes is constructed, indicators such as emission reduction potential and
economy of various industries are considered as a whole, and a regional-level compre-
hensive carbon emission management demonstration is constructed, which can promote
