Illustrated Chen Taijiquan Routine II (Cannon Fist)
4. Peng
Peng appears in two situations of Taijiquan. One is an inflated, outward-ex-
panding energy felt throughout the body. The other is to push with the forearm or
wrist in an arc up and out, warding off an advancing force or striking the opponent.
5. Lü
Lü involves pulling movement with the forearm or wrist sticking to the arm of
the opponent, which arcs up or down. The aim of the lü energy is to direct an oppo-
nent’s energy towards emptiness. It follows the opponent’s energy in order to move
him with a slight change of direction. Lü is often used to neutralize peng.
6. Ji
Ji follows the withdrawing energy of the opponent to squeeze into the oppo-
nent’s center with double hands, single hand, or arms. Ji spoils lü.
7. An
An pushes and presses upward and downward with one palm or double palms,
effectively sealing and closing the opponent’s energy. An destroys ji.
8. Cai
Cai applies a lever action by controlling the opponent’s hand or forearm with
fingers to push it downward or inward.
9. Lie
Lie is a symmetrical “splitting” force between forward and backward, left and
right, up and down, or inward and outward, produced by the waist used as the axis
of rotation.
10. Zhou
Zhou uses one or both elbows to attack. It can be done in a horizontal, vertical,
rising, or falling way. It is a short strike within the reach of the elbow.
11. Kao
Kao basically means to bump the opponent with shoulder, chest, elbow, hip or
back. It is executed with abrupt and straightforward shifting.
