Chapter 6 Climate education for the public

of volunteers; numerous communities have initiated balcony garden competitions to inspire
                 public engagement in environmental protection.
② Policy Guidance: Legislation protects existing green spaces while incentivizing roof-
top greening renovations for new buildings using drought-tolerant plants; vertical greening
projects on building facades are promoted to enhance urban greenery coverage.
③ Public Education: Environmental awareness campaigns strengthen citizens’ habits of
                 ecological conservation.
                     (3) Achievements
Through the joint efforts of the government and citizens, Singapore has become one of
the cities with the highest green coverage rate in the world, boasting excellent air quality and
rich biodiversity, setting an outstanding example for other cities.
2.Low-carbon City Pilot in Shenzhen, China
                     (1)Background
As one of China’s first low-carbon city pilots, Shenzhen has implemented a series of
low-carbon development strategies since 2010, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,
improve energy utilization efficiency, and promote green industry development. This process
relies on close collaboration between the government and citizens.
                     (2)Practices
① Public Transportation Optimization: Vigorously developed public transportation sys-
tems by adding multiple subway lines and optimizing bus networks, increasing the propor-
tion of citizens opting for public transportation.
② Green Building Promotion: Established strict building energy efficiency standards
and promoted green building design concepts, requiring new constructions to meet specific
energy-saving emission reduction targets; conducted energy-saving renovations for existing
buildings to enhance overall energy efficiency.
③ Citizen Participation: Promote the concept of low-carbon living through various
channels, such as establishing low-carbon lifestyle experience centers and hosting low-car-
bon knowledge lectures; encourage citizens to participate in practical actions like waste
sorting and conserving water and electricity, fostering a positive atmosphere of collective
                 societal engagement.
④ Technological Innovation: Support the development of the new energy vehicle in-
dustry and build charging station networks; advance the application of smart grid technology
to achieve efficient allocation of power resources.
                     (3)Achievements
After years of dedicated efforts, Shenzhen has achieved remarkable results in low-car-
bon city development. According to the latest statistics, the city’s CO2 emissions per unit of
GDP have decreased by nearly 40% compared to 2010, with continuous improvements in air
quality and PM2.5 concentrations reaching historic lows. Additionally, Shenzhen has been
designated as a “National Ecological Civilization Construction Demonstration City,” serving
