3.West Lake Ecological Restoration Project in Hangzhou, China
(1)Background
Hangzhou is a famous tourist city in China, home to the beautiful West Lake scenic
area. However, with urban development and increasing tourist numbers, the ecological envi-
ronment of West Lake and its surrounding areas has faced certain pressures. To restore and
protect this precious natural resource, the municipal government initiatedthe West Lake Eco-
logical Restoration Project and actively mobilized citizens and social forces to participate
jointly.
(2) Practices
① Water Quality Purification: Advanced sewage treatment technologies and ecological
restoration methods were adopted to effectively control lake eutrophication; the Clear Water
Inflow Project was implemented to ensure the quality of water sources flowing into West
Lake.
② Wetland Restoration: Multiple wetland conservation zones were established around
West Lake, planting native aquatic plants to build a complete ecosystem; these wetlands not
only beautify the environment but also provide habitats for birds and other wildlife.
③Citizen Engagement: The “I Add Green to West Lake” campaign was launched, en-
couraging citizens to voluntarily adopt trees and donate flower seedlings; environmental vol-
unteer teams were organized to regularly conduct activities like lake cleanups and wildlife
protection.
④ Cultural Heritage: Organize various eco-themed cultural activities integrated with
traditional festivals and folk customs, such as Dragon Boat Races and Lotus Flower Exhibi-
tions, which promote traditional culture while enhancing public environmental awareness.
(3) Achievements
After years of persistent efforts, the ecological environment of West Lake and its sur-
rounding areas has significantly improved. The lake’s water transparency has markedly in-
creased, fish populations have grown, and both the variety and number of bird species have
risen. Notably, in recent years, West Lake Scenic Area has been repeatedly honored as “Most
Beautiful Lake in China,” attracting more domestic and international tourists. More impor-
tantly, through these initiatives, citizens have gained deeper recognition of ecological conser-
vation’s importance, fostering positive environmental habits and social norms.
