tons, accounting for 23%; Packaging 9.61 million tons, accounting for 18%; Storage:
2.07 million tons, accounting for 4%.
According to experts on the carbon sequestration project, the report is based on
some international standards for calculating carbon emissions, with appropriate emis-
sion factors selected for calculation. It is hoped that through such research methods, on
the one hand, the emission level and proportion of e-commerce industry, which occu-
pies an important position in China’s internet industry, can be clearly understood and
the future forecast can be made; On the other hand, it also wants to encourage e-com-
merce enterprises to actively participate, find out their own carbon assets, make a good
carbon reduction plan and lay a good foundation for China to achieve carbon neutrality.
According to the survey of e-commerce trading platforms conducted by the Nation-
al Bureau of Statistics, in 2019, the national e-commerce transactions reached 34.81
trillion yuan, an increase of 6.7% over the previous year and an increase of nearly
471% over 2011. In the same year, the nationwide online retail sales reached 10.63 tril-
lion yuan, more than 1/5 of the total retail sales of social consumer goods in that year.
With the deepening of e-commerce and online shopping into the daily life of the public,
the public’s consumption habits have also changed. At the same time, the huge con-
sumption of energy and resources by e-commerce and the large amount of solid waste
generated therefrom have aroused wide attention and discussion.
The analysis of the above report shows that the carbon emissions of e-commerce
enterprises will reach 116 million tons in 2025, an increase of about 50 million tons
as compared with 2020, with a growth rate of 73%. During the “14th Five-Year Plan”
period, the national emission increment will reach 200 million tons. If e-commerce en-
terprises do not adopt more effective emission reduction measures, their emission incre-
ment will account for 25% of the national increment during the “14th Five-Year Plan”.
The “Research Report on Total Greenhouse Gas Emissions from E-commerce En-
terprises in China” said that except for packaging, the emissions from logistics, data
center, office and storage are all due to energy consumption such as fuel oil and elec-
tricity. Packaging itself does not generate carbon emissions in the process of use, but
generates carbon emissions in the stages of raw material acquisition, production, manu-
             facturing and waste disposal.
In July 2020, the eight departments including the General Administration of Mar-
ket Supervision, the National Development and Reform Commission jointly issued
the Guiding Opinions on Strengthening the Standardization of Green Packaging for
Express Delivery, which put forward the requirements of “greening, reduction and re-
