elbow, turn the waist left; relax immediately and turn the waist right after the strike,
which exhibits the Chen Taijiquan’s “elasticity and flexibility”.
Posture 19 Yun Shou (Qian San)
(Wave Hands [the Front Three])
1. Relax the right hip joint, and turn the torso right. With the heel pivoting,
the left foot turns in on the ball to form a right-weighted, side bow-stance. At the
same time, the right fist opens into a palm and twines reversely to push right and
forward in a convex curve and the left palm twines directly to push right and for-
ward in a concave curve, with the right one to the right front of the right shoulder,
facing right and forward (northeast), the fingers pointing up to the left front, the
right elbow aligning with the right knee, and the left one in front of the abdomen,
facing right (east), the fingers pointing north. At the end of their travel, the palms
have a forearm-length separation between them. The eyes look right and forward.
(Figure 19-1)
2. Turn the torso slightly further right, with the weight shifting slightly left. At
the same time, the left palm twining reversely and the right one directly sink their
bases.
Without a pause, the weight shifts onto the left leg. At the same time, with the
heel off the ground, the right foot twining directly arcs back and left on the inside ball
to end inside the left foot, the right heel corresponding with the left one, the left hip
protruding. The left palm twining further directly and the right one further reversely
push left and forward in a concave curve, with the left one to the left front of the left
shoulder, facing out, the fingers pointing up to the right front, the left arm rounded,
and the right one in front of the abdomen, facing left, the fingers pointing forward,
the right elbow protruding, leaving the armpit open. The palms maintain a forearm-
length separation between them. The eyes look left and forward. (Figure 19-2)
3. With the right heel landing on the ground, the weight shifts onto the right
leg.
Lift the left knee and stamp the left foot flatly. With the toes turned up and in,
the right foot twining reversely slide-steps half a foot right and backward on the
inside heel. At the same time, the right palm twining directly and the left one re-
versely push left and forward, with the left one to the left front of the left shoulder,
facing out, the fingers pointing up to the right front, the left arm rounded, and the
right elbow protruding, leaving the armpit open, and the right one in front of the
abdomen, facing left, the fingers pointing forward. The palms maintain a forearm-
length separation between them. The eyes look right and forward. (Figure19-3)
