                 elbow aligning with the right knee; and the left one in front of the abdomen, facing
                 right, the fingers pointing up to the right front. The eyes look right and down. (Figure
                 39-3)
                      Note: “The palms pushing up and left” in Movement 1 embodies the princi-
                 ples of “moving left before right”, “moving up before down”, and “giving before
                 taking” in practicing Chen Taijiquan.

                 Posture 40 Yan Shou Gong Chui (Cover Hand, Thrust Punch)

                      1. Relax hip joints, and sink the weight, with baihui (GV20) gently pulled
                 up. At the same time, the left palm twining directly rotates out, the wrist flexed in,
                 sinking to pause outside the left knee, facing up, with the fingers pointing in; and
                 the right one makes a fist, twining directly to rotate out, sinking to rest outside the
                 right knee, the heart of fist facing up, the eye of fist facing out. The arms are bent,
                 leaving the armpits empty. (Figure 40-1)
                      2. The weight shifts onto the right leg. With the heel pivoting, the left foot
                 turns in on the ball. The weight shifts onto the left leg.
                      With the heel pivoting, the left foot turns further in on the ball, the toes point-
                 ing northwest, the body turning right, the torso facing northwest. At the same time,
                 with the left hip sinking, the right knee twining reversely rises. The left palm and
                 the right fist twining reversely arc up and forward to end up in front of the eyes,
                 with about 20 centimetres between them, the center of the left palm facing the face
                 of the right fist. (Figure 40-2)
                      3. Stamp the right foot sharply and flatly inside the left one, parallel with the
                 left one. At the same time, the right fist twining further reversely punches down,
