interact and exchange martial arts skills with skilled warriors along the
canal. Whenever they encountered someone with exceptional martial arts
skills, they would humbly seek guidance from them. For example, they
once visited Xie Jinfen and Xie Jinde, two esteemed predecessors, in
Sangyuan. They engaged in sparring using punches and kicks, in which

both Xie Jinfen and Xie Jinde were not as skilled as Liu. They then had a
competition in spear techniques, where the Xie used Miao Dao (a type of

long knife) while Liu was not as proficient. Due to the fact that the Xies
were older and more experienced than Liu, he respectfully became their
student, and they taught him Miao Dao and Yinshou Qiang (a type of spear
technique).
刘玉春,字惠泉,生于清咸丰十年(1860年),因属猴,人称刘申
爷。自幼好武,身高力大,性格开朗,喜交游,以为船主撑船为业。当时
运河漕运昌兴,刘先辈为船主撑船,船行南北不迭,北至通州,南至山东
临清黄河口、河南新乡等地。故先辈与运河两岸武林高手相交切磋武艺者
甚多。遇有身怀绝技之高手则躬身请教之。如在桑园访问过谢晋汾、谢晋
德先辈。双方以拳脚切磋,二谢先辈不及,又以枪法切磋,二谢先辈以苗
刀相对,刘先辈不及。时因二谢先辈长于刘先辈多岁,刘先辈遂拜二谢先
辈为师,二谢先辈以苗刀、阴手枪授之。
In the seventh year of the Republic of China (1918), Cao Kun, the
Inspection Commissioner of Zhili, established a martial arts camp in Ba-
oding and invited renowned martial artists to be instructors. At that time,
Liu Yuchun were famous for his martial arts skills in Beijing and Tianjin.
Since Cao Kun was from Tianjin, he invited Liu Yuchun, who was fellow
towns people with him, to teach Miao Dao and served in this position for
more than eight years. The martial arts camp had many talented people, but
